Major International Project Launches to Boost Pathogen Genomic Surveillance in Africa and Southeast Asia

Partners from 8 countries gathered to jumpstart the largest genomic surveillance network

On September 13-14, a consortium of global health partners gathered alongside the Oxford Tropical Network to launch an ambitious project to create the largest genomic surveillance network for pathogens of public health importance across Africa and Southeast Asia.

This multidisciplinary initiative unites experts from eight countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam. The primary mission is to significantly increase the volume and analysis of pathogen genomes—such as those for dengue and antibiotic-resistant bacteria—to track outbreaks, understand transmission, and identify emerging threats.

A key differentiator of this project is its direct focus on policy impact. The team will work to seamlessly integrate their scientific findings with national and regional policymakers, ensuring data is translated into actionable health strategies. This direct link from the lab to the decision-making table is designed to enhance the uptake of research results and ultimately improve health outcomes for millions.
